When LeBron James entered the NBA in 2003, he was just 18 and already one of basketball’s most anticipated talents. Twenty years later, Victor Wembanyama arrived to similar expectations. Both were selected first in the NBA Draft. Both won Rookie of the Year. Today, LeBron is one of the greatest players in history, while Wembanyama has established himself among the NBA’s elite at only 22.
Their careers began two decades apart, but collectors are drawn to the same thing: their rookie cards capture the first chapter of an extraordinary basketball story.
LeBron James has won four NBA titles and four MVP awards and holds the league’s all-time scoring record. His place in basketball history is secure. As his retirement draws closer, distinctive cards from his first NBA season could receive renewed collector attention.
Victor Wembanyama has already built a remarkable résumé. Standing around 7-foot-4, he combines exceptional reach with movement and shooting rarely seen in a player his size. After winning Rookie of the Year, he became the NBA’s youngest and first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year in 2026, made the All-NBA First Team and led San Antonio to the NBA Finals. He has already proved himself as a superstar, with further career milestones still possible.

Topps Chrome is one of the best-known basketball card lines of its era. Our rookie-year Refractor is a sought-after parallel of the regular card and carries a BGS 9.5 Gem Mint grade. It shows LeBron long before the championships and scoring records. That combination of an iconic early-career moment, a recognised set and high condition is the heart of its collector appeal.

The Blue Ice parallel is numbered to 125 copies, and our example has the top PSA 10 grade. It comes from Wembanyama’s first NBA season, before many of his current achievements. A private Fanatics Collect sale in May 2026 offered a striking sign of demand for this Prizm rookie: the Black 1/1 with the same #136 card number sold for $5.11 million. That unique card belongs to a different price tier, but the sale underlines the importance of this particular rookie set. Wembanyama’s proven achievements, the Blue Ice’s defined scarcity and its top grade give our card its own clear investment case.
Our work at Timeless goes beyond sourcing. We actively place cards in the US collector market through our partnership with Fanatics Collect, one of the world’s largest trading-card marketplaces. Dedicated contacts approach collectors and prospective buyers through their networks, giving our cards visibility beyond a standard online listing.
With support from Fanatics Collect, we completed around 90% of our trading-card exits over the past year. Our recent completed NBA card sales also show the results of actively seeking out serious buyers:
Four different cards, four completed exits with positive gross returns. For us, they underline why access to collectors and buyers matters just as much as choosing the right asset.
LeBron’s rookie card represents the start of an established legacy. Wembanyama’s captures the start of an already celebrated superstar’s career. Each has a different story and its own reasons to interest collectors.
For information only, not investment advice. Returns shown are historical gross results from Timeless exits and do not predict future performance. Trading cards may lose value, and selling them can take time. Please review the relevant offering documents.
